A PET flakes washing line is the core equipment for converting waste PET bottles into clean, reusable PET flakes. For recyclers, however, buying a washing line is not simply about choosing the required capacity. The more important questions are:

  • Can the line remove labels, caps, dirt, oil, and other contaminants effectively?
  • Can it achieve the required PET flake quality?
  • How much fresh water does the process consume?
  • Can process water be recycled?
  • Is the system suitable for the actual quality and composition of the waste bottles?

For these reasons, a properly designed PET flakes washing line should be matched to both the raw material and the customer’s finished-flake specification.

What Can a PET Flakes Washing Line Process?

A PET flakes washing line is mainly designed for post-consumer PET bottles, including:

  • Mineral water bottles
  • Beverage and soft drink bottles
  • Mixed-color PET bottles
  • PET bottles with labels and caps
  • Baled waste PET bottles
  • Dirty or dusty PET bottles

The condition of the raw material has a direct influence on the final PET flake quality.

For relatively clean bottles, a simpler washing process may be sufficient. Heavily contaminated bottles containing oil, adhesive, mud, or other residues may require stronger washing and separation equipment.

Therefore, raw material analysis should come before equipment selection.

What Does the PET Flakes Washing Line Produce?

The finished product is washed PET flakes, which can be further processed into recycled PET products.

Depending on the sorting system, the line can produce:

  • Clear PET flakes
  • Natural PET flakes
  • Blue PET flakes
  • Green PET flakes
  • Mixed-color PET flakes

For customers selling PET flakes as a recycled raw material, important quality indicators may include:

  • 수분 함량
  • PVC content
  • Polyolefin content
  • Impurity content
  • Powder content
  • Intrinsic viscosity (IV)
  • Color purity

For example, one customer’s target specification included natural color content ≥98%, moisture ≤2%, PVC ≤300 mg/kg, and polyolefin ≤300 mg/kg.

These figures are project-specific rather than universal standards. The PET flakes washing line should be designed according to the customer’s actual final-product requirements.

How Does a PET Flakes Washing Line Work?

A typical process is:

Waste PET bottles → Sorting Label removingCrushingPre-washingHot washingFriction washing → Rinsing → Dewatering → Clean PET flakes

1. Sorting

Waste bottles are sorted to remove non-PET materials and unwanted colors or contaminants. Effective sorting at the beginning helps reduce the contamination entering the washing system.

2. 분쇄

PET bottles are crushed into smaller flakes. Smaller particles provide a larger contact area during washing and make it easier to remove labels, dirt and other contaminants

3. Pre-Washing

The pre-washing stage removes loose dirt, sand, and surface contaminants before intensive washing.

4. Hot Washing

Hot washing is used when the PET flakes contain stubborn contamination such as oil, adhesive, or organic residues.

The washing temperature and time should be selected according to the raw material and required product quality.

5. Friction Washing and Rinsing

Friction washing provides additional mechanical cleaning, while rinsing removes remaining dirt and cleaning solution from the PET flakes.

6. Dewatering and Drying

After washing, the PET flakes contain considerable moisture. Dewatering removes most of the free water, followed by drying to reach the required moisture level.

For example, if the customer’s specification requires moisture ≤2%, the dewatering and drying system must be selected accordingly.

Water Circulation System for a PET Flakes Washing Line

Water consumption is an important consideration when planning a PET recycling plant, especially for large-capacity production.

Rather than applying exactly the same water treatment system to every project, we design the water circulation system according to the customer’s specific conditions.

Example: Water Recycling Solution Designed for One Customer

The following is an example of a water circulation system we designed for one of our PET recycling customers.

water recycling design of the PET flakes washing line
water recycling design of the PET flakes washing line

In this project, water from the water-using machines returns to the first underground pool. After filtration and settling, the water flows through the subsequent pools before being pumped back into the production system.

The basic flow is:

Production equipment → Return water → Filtration/settling → Clean-water pool → Pump → Production equipment

The customer’s system included:

  • Underground settling pools
  • A 2.2 kW sludge pump
  • Approximately 15 m³/h sludge-pump flow rate
  • A 1-ton water tank
  • A 1.5 kW stainless-steel suction pump
  • Approximately 28 m head

This is one project example, not a fixed configuration.

For other PET recycling projects, we can customize the water circulation and treatment solution according to:

  • Raw material contamination
  • 생산 용량
  • Fresh-water availability
  • Factory layout
  • Local wastewater requirements
  • Customer’s water-reuse requirements

A properly designed water recycling system can help reduce fresh-water consumption and improve the overall operating efficiency of a PET flakes washing line.

How to Choose the Right PET Flakes Washing Line?

Before purchasing a PET flakes washing line, we recommend confirming five key points.

1. Raw Material

Provide photos or videos of your waste PET bottles and explain their contamination level.

2. Capacity

Tell us your required output in kg/h or tons/day. The equipment configuration should match your actual production target.

3. Finished Flake Quality

Different applications require different levels of cleanliness, color separation and moisture control.

4. Water Conditions

If fresh water is limited or expensive, a customized water circulation system can become an important part of the project.

5. Factory Conditions

Available workshop space, electricity, drainage, water pools, and local environmental requirements should all be considered when designing the PET flakes washing line layout.

Why Choose a Customized PET Flakes Washing Line?

A PET recycling plant is more than a combination of individual machines. The performance of the entire system depends on how the crushing, washing, separation, dewatering, drying, and water-treatment processes work together.

We therefore design PET recycling solutions based on the customer’s:

Raw material → Capacity → Product quality → Factory conditions → Water requirements

If you already have some recycling equipment, you can also purchase individual machines to upgrade your existing system instead of purchasing a complete line.

For a new PET recycling project, we can provide a complete PET flakes washing line together with the corresponding water circulation solution and plant layout.

FAQ

What is a PET flakes washing line?

A PET flakes washing line is a complete recycling system used to process waste PET bottles into clean PET flakes through sorting, crushing, washing, separation, dewatering and drying.

Can a PET washing line remove PVC?

PVC contamination can be reduced through proper sorting and separation. The achievable result depends on the incoming PET bottles and the overall line configuration.

How much water does a PET flakes washing line use?

Water consumption varies according to the line configuration, raw material condition and water recycling system. A customized circulation system can reduce the need for continuous fresh water.

Can I buy individual PET recycling machines?

Yes. Individual machines can be supplied to work with your existing equipment, or we can design a complete PET flakes washing line for a new recycling plant.
